Hizbul Mujahideen militant Mushtaq Ahmad Chopan, who was killed in the attack, tried to escape from Tral police station wearing a burqa. In the incident, constable Mehraj Din was also injured, a police spokesman said.
A total of 26 Army personnel, including three officers and five paratroopers, and seven civilians have been killed in eight terror attacks since October 11, 2021 in the twin districts.
The DGP said the police have resolved not to spare the people behind the act. "It is the resolve of Jammu and Kashmir Police that we are not going to spare these rascals," he said.
Two Army personnel were injured in the gunbattle.
The support for the eight-year-old girl was growing with politicians, cutting across party lines, seeking justice for her.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti warned that there could be a backlash if the force loses patience.
